Description

The AERO 452-201 panel mounted Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector is a TSO Certified unit designed especially for use in FAA certified aircraft. A compact and lightweight unit mounted in small area behind the panel, the 452-201 combines highly accurate CO detection for the cockpit as well as cabin pressure warning and the ability to display on an external unit (see hardware list). This CO detection unit is perfect for owners and pilots looking for protection from the dangers of carbon monoxide in their certified aircraft as a remote unit with integration to display on an existing PFD, MFD, or engine monitor system.

The built-in pressure sensor indicates altitude warnings at 10,000 feet, 12,500 feet, and 14,000 feet as a reminder to the pilot that supplemental oxygen should be used. These warnings are displayed on an optional annunciator light.

The included RS-232 serial connection allows added CO level reporting and alerts to be displayed on a variety of Primary Flight Display (PFD), Multi-Function Display (MFD), and engine monitor products. Please refer to the approved product list below.

The compact and lightweight AERO 452-201 will fit into a small 2.25 inch by 1.5 inch position in a remote location using the included mounting bracket and weighs only 4.0 oz. Installation is very simple and takes only 2-4 hours on average. The 452-201 remote mounted unit requires the installation of an external annunciator light (sold separately) for primary CO alert and warning. Additional reporting and alert on an approved product (see list) is allowed through the RS-232 serial connection. Installation requires the positioning of an included test/reset momentary button in the panel for safety and functionality.

The sensitive onboard CO sensor alarms when carbon monoxide levels measure 50 to 99 PPM over a 3-5 minute span or alarm immediately when CO levels reach above 99 PPM.

FAA Certification

When installed in accordance with this installation manual and the limitations, the installation of our TSO Approved models 452/454/455/551 and 553 is unlikely to have an appreciable effect on the weight, balance, structural strength, reliability, operational characteristics, or other characteristics affecting the airworthiness of the aircraft, and should therefore be eligible for installation as a minor alteration.

Please see the Instructions of continued Airworthiness for each model for limitations (available on downloads page). Most customers have been able to install these as Minor installation per AC 23.1309-IE and FAR 23.109. You must seek proper guidance prior to installation from you local FAA FISDO for clarification.

FAA Advisory Circular on CO

The above FAA circular provides information on the potential dangers of Carbon Monoxide contamination from faulty engine exhaust systems or cabin heaters of the exhaust gas heat exchange type. It also discusses means of detection and procedures to follow when contamination is suspected.

FAA Requirements for CO in Aircraft during Certification

FAR. 23.831 Ventilation in Aircraft

(a) Each passenger and crew compartment must be suitably ventilated. Carbon monoxide concentration
may not exceed one part in 20,000 parts of air (50 PPM).

All Panel mounted units are designed to alarm within 5 minutes if CO is between 50 PPM and 75 PPM to
meet the requirements of TSO C48.

AERO-152WD Warning Levels shown below. Note: (252,352's, 353's,452's and 552 all alarm with 5 minutes if CO is above 50PPM).

Caution - This product is intended to be used in aircraft enclosed cabins. Because of its super-sensitivity, it's not designed to be in compliance with UL2034, OSHA, and other industry standards.

National Transportation Safety Board Recommends CO Detectors to be installed in all General Aviation Aircraft.

FAA CERTIFICATION / STC

When installed in accordance with this installation manual and the limitations that follow, the installation of the model 452 is unlikely to have an appreciable effect on the weight, balance, structural strength, reliability, operational characteristics, or other characteristics affecting the airworthiness of the aircraft, and should therefore be eligible for installation as a minor alteration.

Model AERO 452 has TSO certification and is STC approved for installation on certified aircraft. Customers have three options depending on their relationship with their local FAA FISDO office (you must seek proper guidance prior to installation). 1) Install it as minor log book entry since the unit is TSO approved as non essential equipment. 2) Install it using FAA Form 337 as minor alternation. 3) Install it per supplied STC on a Cessna 172. Data shown in our Downloads section.

However, no approval exists for the other panel-mount models of CO Guardian (models AERO 252, 352's, 353's, 551 and 553). Acceptance for the installation and use of as a non-essential equipment (per AC 23-15, paragraph V, pg. 28), must be sought through your local FBO and the appropriate offices of the Federal Aviation Administration or other certifying agency.

Recalibration

Because of their sensitive nature, all carbon monoxide (CO) detector sensors require replacement after a period of time to remain accurate. All Guardian Avionics / CO Guardian aviation CO detectors feature a self-test at power on for each flight. If the unit shows a failure of the CO sensor upon power up, you must send the unit to Guardian Avionics for replacement or overhaul. Depending on level of use, storage environment, and flight environment, most CO sensors have a usable life of 5-7 years. Though our units have a required Time Before Overhaul (TBO) of Seven (7) years from point of installation regardless of self-test results, we recommend sending in your unit for replacement / recalibration every 5 years during your annual maintenance inspection to assure safety and accuracy of your unit.

The procedure for recalibration is as follows:

  • Remove component and note full model number and unit serial number.
  • Apply for an RMA Number at: https://www.guardianavionics.com/rma-request or call 520-889-1177 (M-F, 8am to 5pm MST) - the RMA number will be emailed back to you.
  • Order a recalibration or new replacement at https://www.guardianavionics.com/recalibration.
  • Send unit in under RMA number to: Guardian Avionics, Attn: RMA #___, 1840 E Valencia Rd, Suite 216, Tucson, AZ 85756
  • Once unit is received by Guardian Avionics, the recalibrated or replaced
unit will be shipped within 3-5 business days unless specified. Core charge will be refunded.
  • Upon receipt of the recalibrated/replaced unit, a fresh 1 year limited warranty applies and the unit has a fresh 7 year TBO.
